The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on the 12th that it will cooperate with the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee to host the first Olympic Esports Games in Saudi Arabia in 2025.
In June, the IOC Executive Board proposed to the full IOC session to hold the Olympic Esports Games. IOC President Bach said at an online press conference, “The establishment of the E-Sports Olympics is a significant step taken by the IOC to keep up with the digital revolution. This proposal will ignite a craze in the e-sports world, and we are very pleased.”
In the meeting that day, the IOC Executive Board emphasized that the E-Sports Olympics should take place under a new framework and that traditional Olympic models cannot simply be replicated in terms of organization and operation.
It is understood that the E-Sports Olympics will build upon the “Olympic Esports Week” held last year in Singapore, which combined physical simulations of Olympic sports with traditional esports games, attracting a large number of young audiences.
Bach had revealed during the Winter Youth Olympics in Gangwon Province, South Korea, that the IOC plans to hold the first Olympic Esports Games in 2025 or at the latest by 2026.
Currently, the inaugural Saudi-hosted E-Sports World Cup is in full swing, featuring games such as League of Legends, Dota 2, CS2, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), Apex Legends, Fortnite, and more, with a total prize pool exceeding $60 million. The successful hosting of this E-Sports World Cup will provide valuable experience for the E-Sports Olympics.
