The studio behind the popular FPS battle royale game, “Apex Legends”, Respawn Entertainment, has recently announced a systematic overhaul of the game. This will not involve adjustments to characters or gameplay, nor the introduction of new modes, but rather a change in how the current battle pass system operates.
In the upcoming Season 22, the premium version of the battle pass, which lasts for three months, will only be available for purchase with real money, and cannot be obtained through the previous season’s battle pass rewards or accumulated in-game premium currency.
Moreover, each season will now have two battle passes: the “Premium Edition” and the “Premium+ Edition”. The regular Premium Edition will cost $10 per half-season, while the “Premium+” version will offer additional in-game rewards at a price of $20.
Consequently, unless players choose not to spend any money on the battle pass, the total cost for the season will either be $20 or $40. According to Respawn, this change is aimed at making the battle pass “more accessible and realistic” for their global player community. However, players are skeptical of this “for the players” rhetoric, seeing it as a result of pressure from the studio’s parent company, EA, and its shareholders.
The maximum level of the battle pass has also been adjusted, reduced from 110 levels to 60. This means that overall, players will need to reach level 120 to obtain all rewards.
Respawn has released the following image to illustrate the new versus old comparisons of all battle pass editions. The rewards for purchasing both passes are now more generous than before.
Before Season 22, there was only one battle pass for the entire season, priced at 950 AC (in-game currency), equivalent to $10.
