KRAFTON has unveiled its annual work plan for 2024 in PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS.
The company emphasizes “raising the bar for game services” and “providing a rich player experience” as key focuses. This year, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS will undergo significant improvements to offer a more structured service, adding more diverse elements to the “drop-collect-survive” gameplay loop.
■ From destructible environments to large-scale cooperation, offering new gaming experiences
A “destructible map environment” is planned to be introduced to increase the game’s dynamism, allowing players to employ various strategic tactics, such as breaking parts of buildings to open up new attack routes or creating cover for tactical battles. A preview of some of these features is expected in an April game update, with ongoing optimization and expansion. Updates will also bring novel experiences to the existing game while preserving its core mechanics, incorporating seasonal, cooperative, and mode-specific features to enhance player interaction.
Gameplay updates will occur every two months to foster a stable ecosystem and provide more diverse options. The “Gunfight Lab” in Arcade Mode will serve as a platform for players to test gunfight balance adjustments before widespread implementation and provide feedback. Additionally, the game is developing items and actions to aid survival while refining and expanding special modes for a more casual gaming experience.
■ Enhancing game quality through improved matchmaking and competitive modes
To create a healthier matchmaking environment in regular matches, changes are in the works. The MMR (Matchmaking Rating) system will be refined to ensure that players of similar abilities can compete fairly in a stable environment. Furthermore, to avoid disruptive encounters with bots in casual matches, bot behavior is being developed to mimic normal players more naturally.
Competitive modes will also undergo extensive improvements. The primary goal is to further strengthen the connection between casual matches, competitive modes, and esports. Starting in April, players can experience the new map “Rondo” in Competitive Mode, and there are plans to include “Rondo” in the official PUBG esports map pool later this year. Competitive mode rewards will also be revamped, offering new rank rewards and exclusive prizes only obtainable through competitive play. To better reflect players’ skill levels, ranking point calculations, including increased emphasis on eliminations, will be tested for a pilot implementation in April.
■ Strengthening anti-cheat measures to eradicate illicit programs
To create a more comfortable gaming environment, efforts to combat illicit programs are being intensified. Last year, the focus was mainly on anti-cheat measures in competitive modes, but this year, these efforts will expand and improve not only in competitive modes but also in casual matches and other modes. The existing anti-cheat solutions will be optimized, and deep learning technology will be actively employed to identify and sanction players using illicit programs more swiftly.
Additionally, plans are in place to share important progress and initiatives related to anti-cheat efforts transparently through developer logs, maintaining open communication with the player base.
