Gianluigi Donnarumma: Loss due to too many errors in passing, letting Spain have control makes it tough

On June 21, Italy lost 0-1 to Spain in their second match of Group B at the Euros. Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma analyzed the game, attributing the loss to his team’s numerous mistakes but remaining confident in their future prospects.

Donnarumma explained the reason for the defeat: “We made too many mistakes in our passing, so if you keep making errors, you will be punished.”

Despite the loss, Donnarumma remained upbeat: “We’re disappointed with the loss, but we still have our fate in our own hands, so we can’t consider this a disaster. We have work to do against Croatia, but I believe we have the ability to bounce back.”

Addressing Italy’s issues, he continued: “We need to improve and be more aggressive on the pitch. Our problem was that when we had possession, we were too careless with our passes. In the last 10-15 minutes, our performance improved significantly. If you allow Spain to dominate play, it becomes a difficult situation.”

Comparing their previous victory over Spain in the last Euros to the recent defeat, Donnarumma reflected: “I think we were too hasty in pushing the ball forward, and once they applied pressure, we struggled to maintain control to ease the pressure on ourselves.”
