On June 26 at 6 a.m., Peru will face Canada in the second round of Group A matches in the Copa América. Both teams failed to secure a victory in their opening games, making this encounter crucial as they battle for a spot in the next round.

In the Group A standings, Peru, with one draw and one point, is tied with Chile in second place, while Canada, with one loss and no points, sits at the bottom of the group. Neither team managed to score or win in their opening fixtures.

Peru, although not considered a traditional powerhouse in South America, has a commendable record in Copa América history, having won the title twice (1939 and 1975). In the previous tournament, they finished fourth. The team has been in good form lately, unbeaten in their last five matches, with three wins and two draws.

The Peruvian squad lacks superstar players. According to Transfermarkt, the most valuable players are Abrahan (Atlanta United) and Marcos López (Feyenoord), both valued at €3 million, both playing in defensive positions, indicating the team’s defensive strength over attacking prowess. In their first match against Chile, despite being outshot and having less possession, Peru still managed a goalless draw.

Canada has shown clear signs of improvement in recent years, with its golden generation starting to shine. The team qualified for the 2022 World Cup, where they finished last in their group but gained valuable experience. In the Copa América opener, they lost 0-2 to defending champions Argentina due to a gap in quality. For Canada, securing a second-place finish in the group is a more realistic objective.

According to Transfermarkt, Canada boasts Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) and Jonathan David (Lille), both valued at €50 million, which exceeds the total team value of Peru (€33.48 million). Star power-wise, Canada clearly surpasses Peru. This Copa América presents an opportunity for Canada to continue gaining experience, aiming to bear fruit in the upcoming 2026 World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Peru will be without Cucho Hernández and Bryan Reynolds due to injuries, while Canada enters the match with a full-strength squad.

The two nations have only faced each other once before, back in 2010, when Peru comfortably defeated Canada 2-0.
