Messi Breaks Two Records and Eyes Copa América All-Time Top Scorer Title

On June 21st at 8am, in the first round of Group A, Argentina defeated Canada 2-0.

Messi started the match, increasing his Copa América appearances to 35, surpassing Chilean goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone’s record of 34 appearances and becoming the player with the most Copa América matches played in history. This is also Messi’s seventh Copa América participation, making him the Argentine with the most appearances in the tournament. Angel Romano of Uruguay and Alex Aguinaga of Ecuador have participated in eight Copa América tournaments.

Although Messi didn’t score in the opening game, he has already netted 13 goals in Copa América history, just four goals shy of the tournament’s all-time top scorers Norberto Mendez and Zizinho, who both scored 17 goals. Messi has a strong chance to equal or surpass this record.
