On June 22, it was confirmed by multiple media reports that Celeste Arantes, the mother of the late Brazilian football legend Pele, died on Friday. She was 101 years old.
For the past five years, Arantes, in her advanced age, had been in a vegetative state, and she was not informed of her son’s passing in 2022 due to his illness.
The Pele Foundation released a statement mourning her loss: “Our feelings today are bittersweet. We are deeply saddened by the departure of Celestinha, as her son always called her. At the same time, we will forever be grateful to her. Celeste was the Queen Mother of Brazilian football and will remain in our memories with love and affection.”
