Modric Criticizes Referees: I Don't Know Where the Eight Extra Minutes Came From

In the third round of Group B matches at the Euros, Modric missed a penalty but later scored, only for Zaccagni to score a last-gasp equalizer in stoppage time, resulting in Croatia being held to a 1-1 draw by Italy. After the match, Croatia’s captain, Luka Modric, spoke to the media.

Modric commented, “I don’t know what to say. Football can be cruel, and it showed that today. That’s the situation now. I don’t know where the referee found the basis for adding eight minutes, we don’t accept it. We know our fans are behind us, they’ve been there all along, and I want to thank them.”

“After being equalized in the 95th minute last time, and now in the 98th minute here, we’ve proven how cruel football can be. We’ll see if it’s time to say goodbye, but it’s not the moment for that story now.”

“I wish I could play forever, but there will come a day when I have to stop. But for now, I’ll continue, I don’t know for how long, so we’ll have to wait and see. The pressure was huge, we fought like lions until the end. We didn’t lose, but it’s really hard to find the words to describe how I feel now. We gave everything for Croatia, that’s how we play, regardless of the result. We deserved more.”
