Former German Referee: Can’t Understand Anthony Taylor Not Checking VAR – Rule Clearly States Dumfries Didn’t Affect Goalkeeper

Former German Referee: Can't Understand Anthony Taylor Not Checking VAR - Rule Clearly States Dumfries Didn't Affect Goalkeeper

On the early morning of June 22nd, in the second round of Group D matches at the European Championship, the Netherlands drew 0-0 with France. In the 68th minute of the game, Simmons scored in the box, but the referee disallowed the goal, claiming that Dumfries was offside and had interfered with the goalkeeper.

Former German referee Manuel Gräfe expressed his strong dissatisfaction with this decision on social media: “The Dutch didn’t score… saying it was interference with the goalkeeper, but only when the ball goes to the far post would the goalkeeper touch Dumfries, who is away from the ball. For me, it was a clear goal, but I can’t understand why Taylor didn’t check himself… Also, the offside rule is actually only for the VAR, but it’s up to the referee to decide if the VAR should intervene! At least Anthony Taylor should have had a look himself! The ball wouldn’t have touched TW like that + he would only react at the end of the match…”

Manuel Gräfe then attached the relevant offside rule, writing: “The rule is very clear: Dumfries was not in the line of sight, did not contest the ball with the goalkeeper, and did not make any active movement or obstruct the goalkeeper from reaching the ball. To me, this is normal! Difficult on the field from the left, but difficult for the VAR as well?!”
