Carra: England's Strategy of Dropping Back After Leading Is Unconvincing, Won't Lead to Success

In the aftermath of England’s 1-1 draw against Denmark in their second UEFA Euro group match, renowned commentator Jamie Carragher criticized the team’s performance in an article for The Daily Telegraph.

Carragher said, “What concerns me most when watching this and the remaining fixtures? England are now exhausted, barely touching the ball. The issue is that every player seems drained, with Rice having to cover a vast defensive area.”

In the opening game against Serbia, England retreated into defense after taking a 1-0 lead, barely creating any further threats. A similar scenario unfolded in this match; once ahead, England defended but ultimately couldn’t hold onto the victory.

Interestingly, in the previous European Championship final against Italy, England also took an early lead before retreating, allowing Italy to dominate, which eventually led to them losing the title.

Carragher argues, “I don’t believe this approach can lead to success, Southgate shouldn’t be adopting a defensive mindset after taking the lead, not at all.”
