Van Dijk: Netherlands May Have Overestimated Themselves, Lack Winning Mentality

Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk has suggested that his team may have overestimated their abilities heading into the 2024 UEFA European Championship. Following their defeat to Austria on Tuesday, the Netherlands progressed to the Round of 16 only as one of the best third-placed teams.

Van Dijk said, “I fully understand the criticism, and overall, we should have done better. Perhaps we overestimated ourselves.”

“There was a lot to say after the loss to Austria, a lot to analyze. Tactically, we didn’t go wrong; it was mainly about the will to win, so that’s what we talked about.”

The defender faced stern criticism from Dutch legend Rafael van der Vaart on Dutch television NOS for his “shameful performance,” particularly for his role in the decisive third goal conceded against Austria in Berlin.

On Friday, Van Dijk told the media that he is aware of the need to defend at a higher level. He remarked, “I’m not stupid. I know I can do better, should do better, and that’s what I’m working towards.”

The Netherlands were fortunate in their draw, landing Romania as opponents despite finishing third in their group, avoiding a tougher path that would have included England as the winners of Group C.
