Scholes Fires Again at England: Don’t Let Rice Have Too Much Ball, Starting Saka at Left-Back Is a Mistake

Scholes Fires Again at England: Don't Let Rice Have Too Much Ball, Starting Saka at Left-Back Is a MistakeAs the England team gears up for their Round of 16 clash against Slovakia in the European Championship, former England midfielder Paul Scholes has once again criticized the squad, insisting that Declan Rice should have less possession and that playing Bukayo Saka at left-back would be a poor decision.

Despite topping their group to advance to the knockout stage, Southgate’s England has failed to impress fans, sparking discontent. Scholes argues that for England to shine, Rice must pass more and hold onto the ball less, “Foden and Bellingham will lead the team to victory, but Rice needs to make more forward passes and reduce unnecessary touches. Having Bellingham alongside Rice is the key to success.”

Reacting to potential lineup changes for the Round of 16, Scholes lashed out at suggestions that Saka should play at left-back, labeling it “absurd” and a “blunder” if Southgate were to follow such advice.

In the final group match, England drew 0-0 with Slovenia, with Gallagher having a poor game, while Mbuemo and Palmer made positive impacts after coming off the bench, prompting calls for them to start in the next round. However, it’s been the attacking struggles that have plagued England throughout the group stage, with players like Kane and Bellingham failing to deliver outstanding performances.

This marks Scholes’ second critique of the England team since the tournament began. After the narrow 1-0 win over Serbia in the opening game, he criticized Southgate for not including Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish in the squad and expressed his disappointment with England’s performance, even stating that he didn’t want to watch their matches anymore.
