Both the USA and Mexico Eliminated! For the First Time in Years, Both North American Powerhouses Exit a Major Tournament in the Group Stage

On the early hours of July 2nd, the 2024 Copa América group stage continued, with host team USA bowing out disappointingly. Uruguay secured the top spot in their group with an impressive three consecutive victories.

The USA started strong, defeating Bolivia 2-0 in their opening match. However, they suffered a 1-2 loss to Panama in their second game after receiving a red card in the first half. To keep their hopes alive for the knockout rounds, the USA needed to beat Uruguay in their final group fixture.

In the decisive clash against Uruguay, the match was intense and physically demanding, with several injuries. The USA struggled to break down Uruguay’s solid defense, and their efforts were stifled. The turning point came in the 66th minute when Mathías Olivera scored from a precise set-piece to give Uruguay the lead.

Trailing by one, the USA pushed forward, intensifying their attacks, especially in set-pieces, but failed to find an equalizer, ultimately losing 0-1.

In parallel, Panama secured their progression with a 3-1 victory over Bolivia in another group match.

With these results, Uruguay finished atop the group with a perfect record, followed by Panama in second place. The USA, unfortunately, faced elimination at the group stage.

Notably, Mexico also bowed out in the group phase, marking the first time since 1950 that both North American heavyweights have exited a major tournament in the group stages together.

In a tightly contested group alongside Venezuela, Ecuador, and Jamaica, Mexico finished third, missing out on the quarterfinals as Venezuela and Ecuador advanced.

Uruguay’s three consecutive wins in the group stage are a historic repeat of their performance in the 1935 Copa América.

Argentina, Venezuela, and Uruguay all finished with perfect records in their groups – a first in Copa América history. If Colombia defeats Brazil, this record would expand to four teams.
