There are reports that England, aiming to secure the group’s top spot to avoid an early encounter with Germany in the Euros, will start Gallagher in midfield instead of Arnold in their final group match. England legend Gary Lineker discussed his views on Arnold playing in midfield during a BBC program.
“I feel for Arnold, who has been left out there under pressure. Southgate said that Arnold in midfield was an experiment, and now it seems that experiment has failed.”
“Even with a strong team, it’s difficult to ask players to play out of position. When a team is already struggling and the cohesion is lacking, and talented players don’t get a chance, it becomes even harder. I feel for Arnold because he is a gifted player.”
Lineker’s perspective was echoed by Rooney. “I’ve always been against Arnold playing in midfield. I like him as a full-back coming forward at the right moments. Playing him in midfield in a major tournament is very different from his style.”
“How many times have I said it, I wouldn’t play him there. We have Mino, we have Waddle, I’d put Bellingham alongside Rice to create width for Gordon and Foden.”
