In the third round of Group D matches in the Euros, the Netherlands twice came from behind but ultimately lost 3-2 to Austria, securing their progression as group runners-up. After the match, Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk spoke to the media.
Van Dijk said, “We were poor in every aspect. We started loose and then we weren’t good enough in possession or in duels, which put us on the back foot.
“You have to try and keep the ball for longer periods so that you’re more involved in the game. But of course, it starts with the duels, and we didn’t put in enough effort there.”
“We all have a responsibility. It shouldn’t have happened, but it did, and it’s disappointing. If we want to achieve anything in this tournament, changes need to be made quickly.”
