Spain Coach: Kroos Should Have Been Sent Off; Absences in the Semifinals Won't Stop Us

After eliminating Germany to reach the Euro semi-finals, Spanish national team coach Luis de la Fuente praised his squad’s performance in a press conference.

Commenting on the match strategy, Fuente said, “At that crucial moment, we controlled the pace of the game and ultimately won this tough battle.”

Addressing the red card and potential absences due to injuries, he stated, “We will cherish this historic moment. Pedri suffered a harsh collision that could have warranted a more severe punishment. But I don’t make excuses – if someone can’t play, others must step up. Our 26 players are ready for any challenge.”

Regarding Germany’s 22 fouls, he remarked, “I’m not surprised; that’s part of football. I’ve experienced football from the ’80s, where fouls were even more aggressive. In top-level competitions, games are always at the limit, and we must give our all. I respect the opponent’s attitude, but I focus on what we do, which is remarkable and something to be proud of.”

Speaking about the uniqueness of his team, he said, “They have determination and ambition. It’s an honor to lead such a group of players who have won everything at the youth level. This team always gives their all because they have passion, pride, and ability. It’s a team you can trust.”

When asked about Dani Olmo’s performance, Fuente replied, “All players give their best, and I know they won’t let us down. This is a responsible team, a model for the nation and society. I’m incredibly proud to work with them.”

On personal evaluations, he responded, “What matters most is the love and respect of the players. External opinions are irrelevant to me. When we lose, you might criticize me, but it doesn’t bother me, as we always give our all in matches.”

Reflecting on the historic moment, Fuente stated, “This is our first win against the host nation and a five-game winning streak. We’re on a historic journey. We’ll see how far we go; the team’s unity drives us forward. We crave everything and strive for the highest honors. Every step in football and life isn’t easy, but our team sets an example of values.”

He appealed to the fans, saying, “Tomorrow’s semifinal begins, and we need to stay calm. The passionate support of the Spanish people fuels us, and we’re honored by millions watching. We hope to raise expectations, but it’s crucial to enjoy the journey, not just the result.”

In a brief interview, Fuente emphasized, “Today’s match showcased the players’ fighting spirit and unity, resulting in an extraordinary achievement. If they weren’t legends before, they will be now.”

Adding, “Every player is ready to step up when needed. I’m immensely proud of their performances. Tomorrow, we’ll have recovery training to ensure everyone is at their best for the next match.”

Regarding the team’s standing in the hearts of the nation, he expressed, “Representing the national team and receiving the support of the entire country is a great honor. These players embody our nation’s values, and their emotions resonate with everyone. We don’t know what lies ahead, but we’ll always hold our heads high, keeping Spain in its rightful place.”

Finally, on Pedri’s injury and the match’s intensity, Fuente commented, “Pedri is indeed injured. I believe Toni Kroos’ foul on him deserved a red card. Whether on the pitch or the bench, he will continue to contribute. At this stage, we must utilize all our resources. I have no complaints about German football.”
