On July 4th, Newcastle United Football Club officially announced the appointment of 42-year-old Paul Mitchell as the club’s new Sporting Director.
The official statement read: “Newcastle United is delighted to announce the appointment of Mitchell as its Sporting Director. A former athlete who retired early due to injury, he has since become a highly respected sports director with a track record of significant success. His non-playing career began in scouting and recruitment, initially at Milton Keynes Dons, followed by key roles at Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, RB Leipzig, Red Bull Global Soccer, and AS Monaco.
During his time as Scout and Director of Analysis at Southampton, he achieved success in player recruitment, helping the club return to the Premier League and establish itself as a regular in the top half of the table. His unique and advanced recruitment strategies enabled Southampton to outperform many competitors on a lower budget. At Tottenham Hotspur, as Head of Recruitment, he continued to build his reputation, and at RB Leipzig, as Head of Recruitment and Club Development, he combined traditional scouting with data-driven analysis, later becoming Technical Director for Red Bull’s global football division.
Mitchell said, “I am honored to be appointed as the new Sporting Director of Newcastle United. I have seen the recent progress and ambition of the club, and coupled with the incredible fan base, it made my decision to join very easy. I can’t wait to get started and help the club continue its development and maintain long-term competitiveness.”
