No Wins in Sight! Scotland Fails to Secure a Victory in World Cup and Euro Competitions Since 1996

On June 24th, in the final match of Group A in the Euros, Scotland lost 0-1 to Hungary, finishing at the bottom of the group with one draw and two losses, totaling one point, and saying goodbye to this edition of the tournament. Since the 1996 European Championship, the Scottish national team has not won a single match in either the Euros or the World Cup.

In this Euro competition, Scotland started with a 1-5 defeat against the host nation Germany, drew 1-1 with Switzerland in the second round, and under immense pressure to win in the last match, they were knocked out by Hungary with a 0-1 last-minute goal. They ultimately finished at the bottom with one point, ending their hopes of advancing to the Round of 16.

The last time Scotland tasted victory in a major tournament was back in the 1996 Euros, when they defeated Switzerland 1-0 in the final group stage match.

Since then, Scotland has failed to secure a win in any major tournament. In the 1998 World Cup, they managed only one draw and two losses, while in the 2020 Euros, their record remained the same – one draw and two losses. In this Euro, they maintained consistency with another 1 draw and 2 losses.

After 1996, in the three major tournaments Scotland has participated in, they have cumulatively achieved only three draws and six losses, becoming a perceived weaker team.
