Former German national team goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, known for controversial comments, such as those about Spanish players’ height, recently took issue with German midfielder André Schürrle’s pink hair, suggesting that UEFA should regulate such actions.
In the buildup to Germany’s UEFA quarterfinal match against Spain, Lehmann described the Spanish team as a “young, inexperienced, and small team,” sparking discussions.
This time, Lehmann targeted Schürrle’s unconventional hair color during an appearance on the TV show “Welt der Wunder.” He commented, “His pink hair makes you wonder if there’s some kind of identity crisis going on that he feels the need to express in this way. As a teammate, I would find it peculiar. I also struggle to imagine the national team coach being thrilled about it.”
Schürrle’s frequent changes from blonde to pink did not sit well with Lehmann: “What message is he trying to convey? Society should be cautious. Maybe he identifies with femininity, which we should accept. But I’d like to see UEFA prohibit hair colors like Schürrle’s to avoid distractions for opponents.”
However, Germany’s head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, has not expressed any objections to his players’ personal style choices. Recently, he stated, “Every player has the right to decide their hair color. I usually don’t interfere with their private lives. My focus is on whether Robert is in good form, that’s all.”
