Reflecting on the formation of the Argentina U23 team, Mascherano said, “We knew it would be a challenging process, but I also want to thank the players for their commitment and willingness to represent their country. We feel calm and content with the squad we have assembled.”

“Messi and Di Maria not being part of the team? From the beginning, we reached out to them. I have a good relationship with both, and everything was clear. They evaluated their situation and what they truly needed. As time passed, it became more complicated.”

“Di Maria declined from the start because he had decided that the Copa America would be his last major tournament with the national team. With Messi, we are aware of the realities. A prolonged absence from his club could create issues for him. We had open conversations, and that was enough for me.”

“Martinez not making the cut? We started talking to Martinez a long time ago. At that time, we didn’t know how Aston Villa’s season would end. Eventually, they qualified for the Champions League, and we knew negotiations with Villa would be difficult. We waited until the last moment as he wanted to try, but we eventually spoke with Rulli, and fortunately, he was available.”

Commenting on Argentina’s performance in the Copa America, Mascherano added, “We’ve always loved the Argentine team. Scaloni has made this team grow match after match, reaching such a high level. Sometimes, we’re no longer satisfied with just victories. After the World Cup final, those who played set the bar too high.”

“For me, Argentina remains at an exceptional level. What makes us all proud is sitting down to watch the national team play and knowing what we’re looking for – a team that stands out from the rest.”
