Ex-England international Ian Wright has criticized the suspension regulations for the ongoing Euro 2024, with Spain set to miss several players against France.
Following their quarter-final victory over hosts Germany, Spain will be without Carvajal and Lenoir-Mourier due to accumulated yellow cards, ruling them out of the semi-final clash. As a commentator for ITV, Wright expressed his discontent with the rule that doesn’t clear yellow cards until after the quarter-finals.
“It’s ridiculous,” Wright said. “You can get a booking in the first game, another in the fourth, and then miss the semi-final. That’s too much. Players might only realize they’re out when they’ve cooled down.”
Meanwhile, there was debate over whether Carvajal’s deliberate second yellow card, which led to a red, would see him miss the final if Spain progressed, given UEFA’s rules only refer to the “next match.” Under these regulations, Carvajal’s maneuver, having already had one yellow, successfully “washed” his disciplinary record.
