This Tuesday, Fernando Sevilla, a high-ranking official within the Mexican Football Federation, revealed topics to be discussed at the upcoming assembly of football club owners, which is set to take place this week. One of the main issues on the agenda is the expansion of the Liga MX from 18 to 20 teams, with no promotion or relegation.
Why has the Liga MX abolished promotion and relegation?
Fernando Sevilla announced that the investment in Mexican football by Apollo Global Management will officially come into effect. The group is set to invest $1.3 billion. However, for this action to be implemented, certain conditions must be met, including the possible elimination of multiple ownership and the abolition of the promotion and relegation system.
“Audits will be conducted on these 18 teams. They will check if clubs are paying their players and sponsors on time, fulfilling television contracts, etc., so that the fund can allocate $1.3 billion, 10% of it to Mexican football. For this to happen, there cannot be promotion or relegation.”
“We will announce the permanent elimination of promotion and relegation because it needs to be a closed group with no investment risks. We will also propose that, although not immediate due to the imminent start of the Liga MX season, next year’s league will expand to 19 or 20 teams.”
