BBC: Henry in frame to replace Page as Wales boss, but may not get big salary

According to the BBC, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry is among the candidates to succeed Rob Page as the manager of the Wales national team.

Henry has previously managed AS Monaco and CF Montréal, and is currently in charge of France’s Under-21 team, preparing to lead the French Olympic team at next month’s Olympics in Paris.

The 46-year-old coach has a connection with Wales, having completed his coaching qualifications with the Welsh Football Association. The FAW dismissed Page last Friday after he failed to qualify for the 2024 UEFA European Championship following a three-and-a-half-year tenure.

The Welsh FA is in no rush to appoint a new manager, given that their next international fixture is in September, when they host Turkey in the Nations League.

Some within the FAW are keen on recruiting a high-profile coach, akin to when they appointed former Wales and Manchester United captain Ryan Giggs in 2018, and Henry, as a player, had an even higher profile than Giggs.

However, the Welsh FA cannot offer the kind of salary some other associations might to Henry, but if appointed, he could potentially continue with part-time roles such as punditry, similar to how Giggs was able to manage his commercial and endorsement affairs while in charge of Wales.
