On July 3, the Netherlands triumphed over Romania with a 3-0 victory in the Round of 16 of the European Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. It marks the first time the Dutch team has won a Euro knockout match since 2004.
The last time the Oranje secured a win in the Euros’ knockout stage was at the 2004 UEFA Euro in Portugal. They advanced from the group stage and then eliminated Sweden in a penalty shootout (5-4) in the quarterfinals before losing to Portugal 2-1 in the semis.
In the 2008 Euros, the Netherlands impressively defeated both the 2006 World Cup champions Italy and runners-up France by 3-goal margins in the group stage, topping their group. However, they were stunned in the quarterfinals, losing 1-3 to Russia after extra time.
The 2012 edition saw the Netherlands finish last in their group with three consecutive losses, failing to qualify for the knockout rounds. Then, in the 2016 Euros, the team didn’t even make it through the qualifiers.
At the 2021 UEFA Euro, the Dutch team went unbeaten in the group stage, winning all three matches to secure first place. Nevertheless, their journey ended in the Round of 16 with a 0-2 defeat against the Czech Republic.
