In the third round of the Copa America group stage, the host United States lost 1-0 to Uruguay, ultimately finishing third in their group and missing out on the knockout phase. After the match, former US national team captain and three-time World Cup participant Clint Dempsey criticized head coach Gregg Berhalter during an appearance on Fox Sports. Dempsey believes that Berhalter is squandering a golden generation of American players with the 2026 US-Canada-Mexico World Cup on the horizon.
Dempsey commented, “I’m at a loss for words, it’s extremely disappointing. You have a team behind you, you want to achieve something, but what have we done since 2022? We qualified for the World Cup, we advanced from the group stage. But have we progressed? No, and that’s the most disappointing part.”
“Right now, we have a golden generation, but it looks like we’re wasting them. 2026 is coming, and we’ll never have this opportunity again. We had the ’94 generation, then we have this current crop of players, but you don’t know when such talented players will come around again.”
