According to Dutch media outlet AD, Dutch referee Mark Clattenburg has returned home and will not officiate any further matches in the ongoing Euro 2024 tournament.
Clattenburg officiated two matches at the event, Germany vs. Hungary and Italy vs. Croatia, both of which sparked controversies. There were suggestions that Ilkay Gündogan’s goal for Germany may have resulted from an earlier foul, and the eight minutes of added time in the Croatia-Italy fixture led to strong objections from the Croatian team, who were ultimately equalized by Italy in stoppage time, thus being knocked out. It is understood that the referee does not solely determine the additional time, but it is decided upon collectively by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and the fourth official.
While it is unclear whether Clattenburg’s departure is a direct consequence of these disputes, he will no longer be involved in refereeing duties for this edition of the Euros. Incidentally, he was the sole Dutch referee at the tournament.
