In this European Championship, English football legend Gary Lineker had been quite critical of England’s performance. However, after Southgate’s departure, he still extended his best wishes to him.
Lineker posted on social media, “Wishing Gareth Southgate all the very best for the future. He brought pride, respect, and unity to the England team, something we hadn’t seen for a long time. He came so, so close to etching his name in football history. He always conducted himself with humility, decency, and dignity.”
Nonetheless, Lineker still believed that Southgate should have left after losing the European Championship final. On his personal podcast, he said, “I think, in terms of uniting the national team, he was the right man. But perhaps it’s now time to find someone who can bring a more modern, more attacking style of football. Because I believe if you’re always defending, you’re getting further and further away from victory.”
