July 18 – After the team’s resounding 5-1 victory over Hearts in a friendly match, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou spoke to the press, addressing controversies surrounding Argentine midfielder Enzo and topics like Gareth Southgate announcing he will no longer coach England.
[Reports suggest you could be the new England team manager?]
Postecoglou: Mate, I had a nap this afternoon, so I didn’t know. I’m the Tottenham Hotspur manager, and I’m determined to bring success to this club just as I have at others.
[Can you understand Gareth Southgate’s decision?]
Postecoglou: Yeah, throughout my career, I’ve always felt that was a natural end. Sometimes, as a coach, things get out of your control, and you don’t have a choice but to move on. What he did was incredible, his record in major tournaments, the performances. He’s created that expectation for England now. He’s the one who knows best if it’s time for him to step aside.
[What’s your reaction to the video of Argentine players chanting about the French national team, have you seen it?]
Postecoglou: As I said before, those affected are the ones best placed to judge how things are progressing. I don’t understand why in this day and age you still put these things out there. Not what they were chanting, but the celebration itself. In the past, celebrations were behind closed doors, enjoy those moments.
