France Loses in Regular Time of a Major Tournament Knockout Stage for the First Time in Years; Last Occurrence Was at the Brazil World Cup

On July 10, in the semi-finals of the European Championship, France lost 1-2 to Spain in a stunning comeback. This is the first time in ten years that France has lost within the regular 90 minutes of a major tournament knockout match.

The last time France lost within the 90-minute regulation of a major tournament’s knockout stage was back in the 2014 World Cup, when they were defeated 0-1 by Germany in the quarterfinals, thus ending their campaign in the top eight. It was after this that French football began to flourish, entering yet another golden age.

In the 2016 European Championship, France performed outstandingly, advancing all the way to the final. They drew 0-0 with Portugal within the 90 minutes, but after a grueling extra-time battle, they lost 0-1 to their opponents and finished as runners-up.

In the 2018 World Cup, France overcame all obstacles and ultimately claimed the championship.

In the 2021 European Championship, after progressing from the group stage, France faced Switzerland in the round of 16. The two teams drew 3-3 within 120 minutes, but France lost on penalties to Switzerland and were eliminated in the round of 16.

In the 2022 World Cup, France reached the final, drawing 3-3 with Argentina within 120 minutes, but they lost on penalties to their opponents and finished as runners-up.

In this edition of the European Championship, France reached the semi-finals, but they were defeated 1-2 by Spain within the 90 minutes. This marks the first time in ten years that France has lost within the 90 minutes of a knockout match.
