Sneijder: I Deserved the Ballon d'Or in 2010, but the Backroom Team Awarded it to Messi

On July 17th, during a Euro Cup-related event held in Zhengzhou, Henan, former Dutch football star Wesley Sneijder attended and was interviewed by media personality Li Lao Ba. In the interview, he directly addressed the controversy surrounding the 2010 Ballon d’Or award, maintaining that he should have won that year’s prize over Lionel Messi.

Li Lao Ba: In China, many fans believe that you should have been awarded the Ballon d’Or in 2010. Who do you think should have won that year if not you?

Sneijder: I fully agree with the Chinese fans’ perspective, but what can I do about it? What I mean is, I can’t decide who wins the Ballon d’Or; there’s a team behind the scenes that decided it should go to Messi. But honestly, 14 years later, people still believe I should have won the Ballon d’Or, which makes me even happier. The fact that people are still discussing this makes me more proud and gives me more motivation. As for who will win the (Ballon d’Or) this year, I think if England beats Spain, then Jude Bellingham should win the Ballon d’Or.

Li Lao Ba: Back in 2010, I was still in high school, and at the time, I kept arguing online that you deserved the award.

Sneijder: Why didn’t you send a message to the jury? Maybe they would have changed their minds. Anyway, I’m glad you were angry because I was also angry. But after that, I forgot about it and continued my career.
