In this European Championship, Spanish prodigy Yamal has undoubtedly been the standout star. Today, he sat down for an exclusive interview with Marca, where he discussed some behind-the-scenes details from the tournament as well as his future plans.
Speaking about his crucial goal against France, Yamal said, “My teammates kept feeding me the ball, and that goal was a team effort. Before scoring, I had a feeling I would get it in. When I lifted my head, I saw the goal, so I didn’t choose to pass; luckily, I scored.”
“During the European Championship, Mbappe asked for my jersey, along with other staff members from the locker room. On the day we played Italy, Chiesa also wanted it. The staff told me that Mbappe wanted to have my jersey, so I gave it to him. After defeating France and advancing to the final, I was so excited that I forgot a lot of what happened then.”
Regarding comparisons to Messi, Yamal stated, “I strive to be myself. Comparing myself to the best player in history doesn’t help me because I will never be exactly like him. I just want to be Yamal, someone people remember, and that’s all.”
Talking about his desire for the European Championship title, Yamal expressed, “I hope I can win the title on the very first day of being 17 years old. Although it’s incredibly difficult, if it happens, it would be absolutely amazing.”
