Catalan outlet Sport reports that Barcelona is set to receive a fee of €3,161,000 from UEFA as compensation for its players’ participation in the Euros. This figure sets a new record for the highest compensation received by Barcelona in the history of the tournament.
Barcelona has earned this compensation through 13 of its players including Pedri, Gavi, Ferran Torres, Ter Stegen, Lewandowski, Christensen, Koundé, De Jong, Firmino, Gundogan, Cancelo, João Félix, and Dembélé. The calculation method is complex, depending on how far the player’s national team progresses in the Euros, not only considering the club the player was affiliated with during the 2023-24 season but also taking into account their club during the 2022-23 season. If a player was at different clubs during this period, the compensation is split proportionally. The specific compensation amount per player is shown in the following image.
Sport calculates that in the Spain vs France clash, if France had progressed, Barcelona would have received approximately €3,044,955. Now, with Spain advancing, the amount due to Barcelona will reach €3,161,655.
This is the first time that Barcelona has received compensation from the Euros in the €3 million range. The previous record was €2,850,056 for the 2020 Euros (held in 2021). In earlier editions, Barcelona’s earnings were €2,017,499 (2016), €2,210,202 (2012), and €955,090 (2008).
In the World Cup, Barcelona’s record compensation came from the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where 17 players (a club record) participated. Additionally, there were 7 former players like Messi and Griezmann, who still had part of their compensation rights attributed to Barcelona, resulting in a total of €4,114,902 received by the club.
