Halfway through the Chinese Super League (CSL) season, as an experienced CSL player, Zhang Wei remains a crucial pillar for his team’s defense. Recently, Shenzhen New Pengcheng Football Club conducted an exclusive interview with him.
New Pengcheng: Born in Henan and starting your career in Shanghai, please share your journey in football.
Zhang Wei: I was born in Henan but moved to Nanjing with my parents when I was one year old, where they have been living ever since. My football journey began in Nanjing while attending No. 1 Central Primary School in Gulou District. I received my football education alongside Wu Lei and Lin Chuangyi at the same school. After finishing primary school, I went to Beijing, and at 16, I relocated to Shanghai to embark on my professional football career.
New Pengcheng: With half of this season’s CSL matches already played, what changes do you think are most significant in the league?
Zhang Wei: The domestic league has been gradually recovering over the past two years. This year, fan interest in the CSL, the intensity of competition, and the duration of actual play have all increased. Each team has its distinct characteristics, making games challenging. For us, it’s essential to continue giving our best effort to achieve better results.
New Pengcheng: Having competed in the CSL for many years and won a championship, what experiences do you hope to impart to younger players? What goals have you set for yourself?
Zhang Wei: I still maintain a rookie’s mindset; I feel young at heart. There are numerous young players in the team, and I try to share the knowledge accumulated over the years during training and matches to help them grow and contribute to the team’s progress. Last year, my statistics were three goals and one assist, and this year, my goal is not to fall short of last season’s performance.
New Pengcheng: Since moving to Shenzhen, how has your life changed? Have you adapted to the climate and cuisine here?
Zhang Wei: I find the food here acceptable because, after traveling extensively over the years and playing in different away games, I can adapt quickly. However, the weather in Shenzhen is indeed very hot, and I need to adjust to it gradually.
New Pengcheng: After each home game, fans encourage the entire team to keep pushing forward, hoping for even better results. How do you respond to their expectations?
Zhang Wei: We can only respond to their expectations through our actions and performances on the field. I hope our results will improve, attracting more fans to the stadium. One day, we may see the stands completely full, with everyone fighting together.
