Following Scaloni’s successful defense of the Copa America title with Argentina, and achieving the feat of winning three consecutive major tournaments, renowned coach Irureta, who coached Scaloni during his playing days, believes that Scaloni is the best football coach in the world today, with a coaching style reminiscent of Guardiola.
In an interview with Super Deportivo Radio in Scaloni’s hometown in Santa Fe Province, veteran coach Irureta made these remarks. Irureta said, “I coached him at Deportivo La Coruna, and I believe he is currently the best coach in the world, capable of bringing more glory to the Argentine national team.”
Irureta and Scaloni have fond memories from their time together at Deportivo La Coruna, where Scaloni played for nine seasons, winning the league title, Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League. The mighty reputation of “Super Depor” echoed across Europe during those times.
As a distinguished coach, Irureta compared his protégé with the esteemed Guardiola, stating, “Scaloni reminds me of Guardiola; there are many similarities in their coaching methods and playing styles. Both have clear thinking and always strive for an attacking style of play.”
However, unlike Guardiola becoming a legend at Barcelona, Irureta believes that Real Madrid is a better fit for Scaloni. Irureta said, “I think he might be better suited for Real Madrid rather than Barcelona. He would make Real Madrid incredibly strong, and the club’s style would suit him better. It’s a team with a great history and a great squad, and he could become another legendary figure there.”
