On August 4th, in the Olympic women’s singles tennis final, Chinese player Zheng Qinwen defeated Croatia’s Donna Vekić 2-0 to win the gold medal.
In a post-match interview, Zheng Qinwen said, “This victory is incomparable and unique for me, because the Olympics have always been more important than the Grand Slams for both myself and my family. In our hearts, national honor always surpasses personal achievement, and I believe every Chinese person feels the same way. So when I made history by becoming the first player to win an Olympic singles gold medal, I felt that all the hard work, sweat, tears, and difficulties were worth it in that moment. Only I, along with my team and my family, know how much effort we put in to reach this point, all for this very moment.”
Zheng Qinwen added, “I’ve always believed in passing on the torch. Everything needs to be passed down, and if my victory today can inspire more children to pursue their tennis dreams, then it’s all worth it. I also hope that ten or twenty years from now, you will be able to stand on this stage. This is the pinnacle of dreams. When you experience what I’m feeling right now, you’ll find that life is truly worthwhile.”
