Mascherano: Substitutions Had an Impact But We Ultimately Didn't Win

In the Olympic men’s football quarterfinals, Matteta scored the only goal of the game as Argentina lost 0-1 to France, ending their run in the tournament at the quarterfinal stage. After the match, Argentina U23 head coach Mascherano spoke to the media.

Mascherano said, “We created more opportunities but ultimately left with nothing. Today we have to go home. The substitutions did have an impact and always seemed to improve the team’s performance, but we still didn’t manage to win.”

“After the first 20 minutes of the first half, our performance improved and we almost controlled the game. Losing is always tough, but we believed we had a chance to progress further. I am very grateful for the help from the three senior players, as well as the full commitment of the young players and the support from their respective clubs. There is no blame for these young players; instead, they deserve recognition and praise.”

“Being eliminated is painful, and we need to digest this defeat because we were full of hope. As for the South American U20 Championship held in Chile? We’ll see. My thoughts are still on this Olympic tournament. I will return to the hotel to process this.”
