On August 2, Chelsea’s new head coach, Maresca, gave an interview where he stated that although he shares a similar bald look with Pep Guardiola, he is by no means a version 2.0 of the famed manager.
Maresca previously served as assistant coach at Manchester City, working under Guardiola, and during the 2022-23 season, he helped the team achieve a treble. Maresca revealed that before taking over at Chelsea, he had a conversation with Guardiola: “He was very happy for me joining Chelsea. I owe him gratitude for achieving such success in my coaching career.”
Maresca emphasized his intention to adapt and build the team according to their circumstances: “When I was coaching Leicester City, their management hoped we could play like Manchester City. I told them straight away that we don’t have players like those at City, and I’m not a coach like Guardiola. The same applies now at Chelsea; I need time to build the team, and the players need to understand how we want to play.”
Maresca made it clear that he is not simply Guardiola 2.0: “Both Guardiola and I are bald and have beards, but that doesn’t mean we’re identical in every way.”
