Matthaus: Bayern’s summer transfer window performance is unsatisfactory, acquiring Jawadou is a gamble

On July 30th, German football legend Matthias Matthaus expressed in his personal Sky Sports column that FC Bayern Munich’s performance in the summer transfer window was not satisfactory, and more worryingly, the remaining time for their operations is dwindling.

Matthaus: Bayern's summer transfer window performance is unsatisfactory, acquiring Jawadou is a gamble

Matthaus believes that Bayern’s moves in the transfer market are almost like revealing their hand, making it easy for negotiating parties to understand Bayern’s intentions and hinder their demands. He wrote, “Every club knows that Bayern still wants to offload some players. Meanwhile, the defending champions Leverkusen have kept their championship squad from last season intact, while Bayern remains embroiled in endless discussions.”

Regarding Bayern’s uncertainty over their central defender selection, Matthaus also had his thoughts. He wrote, “I believe Bayern doesn’t need to rush to sign a new central defender during the summer window; their current lineup is already strong. Bayern want to sign Jonathan Tah? I think this is a gamble. If I were Tah, I would ask myself: If Bayern really want me, why are they willing to spend 125 million euros on other players, while my offer is only 25 million euros?”

According to Matthaus’ perspective, if Tah could return to his form during Leverkusen’s championship-winning season, it would be a significant reinforcement for Bayern Munich, but such certainty cannot be established immediately. Matthaus wrote, “It is currently unclear whether Tah can secure playing time in Munich, and he seems less suited to Bayern’s preferred four-man defense system. During the European Championship, Tah performed poorly in the national team’s four-man defense, but he played more stably at Leverkusen.”
