On July 17, during Spain’s European Cup title celebration held yesterday, Spanish midfielder Rodri was photographed chanting, “Gibraltar is Spain’s,” during the festivities.
However, Spain’s captain Morata, who was nearby, reminded him, “Be careful, you play in England.”
But Rodri responded defiantly, “I don’t care.”
Historically, Gibraltar was recaptured by the Spanish in 1410 and officially incorporated into Spanish territory in 1501. It has been occupied as a British colony since 1704. However, Spain has never given up its claim to recover Gibraltar, consistently asserting its sovereignty over it. Dialogues between Britain and Spain regarding Gibraltar began in 1961. On August 5, 2013, the Spanish government planned to reclaim Gibraltar.
It is reported that the Gibraltar Football Association has formally complained to UEFA about this incident.
