On August 2, following the preliminary heats of the women’s 200m individual medley at the Paris Olympic Games this afternoon, Slovakian swimmer Petra Potocka collapsed. According to L’Equipe, the athlete was conscious but was taken away on a stretcher for treatment and respiratory support.
The report states that the 21-year-old swimmer, who had placed 23rd in the qualifying heats, fell as she was leaving the pool. Medical personnel quickly attended to her, evacuating her on a stretcher and providing respiratory assistance.
The event organizers explained to AFP: “She is conscious, but we are awaiting new medical information.” They added that Potocka is being cared for by the medical team, and subsequent heats were slightly delayed to allow time for the responders to tend to the swimmer.
