In a pre-season friendly, Nkunku scored the opening goal for Chelsea, but Bolton and Marriott scored two in succession to take the lead. Hugo Chuku came off the bench to level the score, and ultimately, League One newcomers Rexham drew 2-2 with Chelsea. After the game, Rexham manager Phil Parkinson spoke to the media.

Parkinson said, “You have to put it into context; they’ve spent a lot of money on this team, and we were still in the National League (English fifth tier) two years ago. But as far as today’s match is concerned, we matched them, and we could even have won the game.”

This was the first game under new Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, who despite a poor performance, remained optimistic. He said, “For us, the result is always important, but more so is assessing the performance. I’m very satisfied with how the team played, especially in the first half, but we conceded two goals in the second half.”

Since the arrival of American owner Boehly, Chelsea has spent $1.3 billion in the transfer market, and this summer alone, the club spent $100 million on six new signings.
