UK Expert: Man Utd Should Donate Greenwood Transfer fee to Charity, Urges Fans to Pledge Euros per Goal

Renowned European anti-domestic violence campaigner David Challen took to Twitter (X) to urge Manchester United to donate the transfer fee from Mason Greenwood’s sale to a charity.

He posed the question: “Manchester United is a huge global sports club with hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue, yet they have not let go of one player – which would have been easy to do – but instead chose to keep him for financial reasons, effectively putting the company’s financial needs above women.”

Challen also suggested that new Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe lacks concern for women: “His focus is on the success of the men’s team on the field, but when the women’s team wins significant trophies (like the FA Women’s Cup), he is notably absent.”

Not just David Challen and others are making this call; in Marseille, France, local associations against violence towards women are actively campaigning. “Greenwood Not Welcome” has become a trending hashtag on French social media. Conversely, “Welcome Greenwood” is another popular tag. Marseille supporter leader Eric Di Meco posted on his social platform: “Some things we cannot control, but some we can. I pledge that every time Greenwood scores a goal, I will donate 5 euros to a charity that supports abused women. Regardless of whether everyone welcomes Greenwood to Marseille, it doesn’t stop you from donating to charities fighting violence against women, does it?”

A large number of fans have supported and shared this proposal, not just Marseille supporters but also those of their fierce rivals Paris Saint-Germain.

Recently, Greenwood himself addressed the issue, stating: “I am aware of the debate and understand it. I don’t want to be involved in any controversy. It’s all in the past, and we should look forward.”
