Recently, American swimming legend Michael Phelps commented on doping incidents at the Olympics during an interview.
Phelps stated, “If everyone is not subject to the same testing, there’s a serious problem, because it means the sport isn’t fair. If you take that risk [of using performance-enhancing drugs], you don’t deserve to compete.” He insisted that all 23 Chinese athletes who tested positive for doping due to food contamination should be banned, as nine of them won medals at the current Olympics.
“Throughout my career, people have called me a cheat, so I’ve been tested more frequently every week—blood and urine tests. Why? Because I knew I wasn’t cheating, I was clean, and that’s the result,” he said.
“I’m clean,” he added. “All 23 of my gold medals were won fairly. I can say that. I had suspicions about some of the athletes I competed against using performance-enhancing drugs, but it’s not something I could control.”
Regarding China’s victory over the U.S. team in the men’s 4x100m medley relay, Phelps commented, “It breaks my heart to see four years of hard work stolen by cheaters. It’s wrong, and I’ll say it again.”
Phelps also had this message for potential dopers: “Go join the cheaters’ games and keep the Olympics clean.”
