German Media: Dortmund Director Mislintat's Relationship with Coach Şahin Is Nearly Broken

On August 5, according to Kicker, the relationship between Borussia Dortmund director of football, Sven Mislintat, and team coach Nuri Şahin is nearing a breakdown.

According to reports, since Mislintat took over as technical director and team planner for Dortmund in early May this year, he has repeatedly overstepped his role, taking on tasks outside of his designated responsibilities. This has led to arguments with club executives Michael Zorc and Sebastian Kehl, as well as head coach Nuri Şahin.

Mislintat’s role at Dortmund differs from his previous positions at Stuttgart and Ajax, where he was directly involved in transfer negotiations with other clubs and players. At Dortmund, however, he is not responsible for such specific transfer dealings, which has left him dissatisfied. He has also frequently exceeded his authority in his work.

In the 2023-24 season, despite finishing fifth in the Bundesliga, Dortmund reached the Champions League final but lost 0-2 to Real Madrid, securing the runner-up spot. Due to the Bundesliga’s top-two ranking in European league coefficients last season, Dortmund, as the fifth-placed team, qualified for the Champions League.
