According to French media L’Equipe, due to an overall decline in league revenues, Ligue 2 may be forced to abandon the use of VAR in the upcoming season because of its even worse financial situation.
The newspaper writes that with the overall decline in league income, the top leaders of the French Football Federation are requesting all members to “save where possible and save as much as possible.” Currently, they are investigating all possible expenses, one of which involves the implementation of VAR.
The initial plan was for 2023, as part of a new contract signed with the Ligue 1 service provider Hawk-Eye. The latter used the off-season to install its system in Ligue 2 stadiums. For over six months, Ligue 2’s VAR referees have been undergoing special training to obtain FIFA certification to use VAR.
Just as everything was ready, taking into account the approximately €7.7 million cost of using VAR in Ligue 1, combined with Ligue 2’s current poor financial status, the league has had to reassess its previous plans. Although nothing is set in stone yet, the presidents of Ligue 2 clubs are already preparing for a new season without VAR. The president of Reims Club, in an interview, questioned, “VAR isn’t cheap, should we continue?”
