According to the latest news from Spanish media, La Liga giants Barcelona are considering selling German midfielder İlkay Gündogan to a club in Qatar, with the aim of optimizing their salary structure and accumulating funds for the upcoming summer transfer window.
Spanish TV station TV3 has revealed that Barcelona’s management is already preparing plans to sell this German international to a Qatari team. Meanwhile, another Spanish media outlet, Mundo Deportivo, further confirms that Al Sadd Club from Qatar has already extended a lucrative offer to Gündogan, and the club is now working hard to convince the midfielder to accept the transfer proposal. If Gündogan agrees to the transfer, he will sign a lucrative three-year contract with the Qatari club.
Despite this, Gündogan is not in a hurry to leave Barcelona. His contract with the club runs until June 2025, and he is quite content with the warm climate and pleasant lifestyle in Barcelona, factors which mean he is not eager to make a decision.
The reason Barcelona welcomes Gündogan’s departure is because they need to raise funds to pay the transfer release clause for Nico Williams, which amounts to €58 million. The 33-year-old Gündogan earns an after-tax salary of €9 million at the Camp Nou, and given his performance in the 2023/24 season did not meet expectations, the club believes it is the right time to sell him and obtain a transfer fee while freeing up salary space.
This move by Barcelona is not only about adjusting the financial situation of the team but also an important strategic decision for the future development of the club. Gündogan’s stay or departure will depend on his personal wishes and the progress of negotiations with Al Sadd Club.
