On July 26, Manchester United star Harry Maguire discussed the England national team’s European Championship journey, expressing that the criticism they’ve received is somewhat absurd. Maguire believes that not taking risks is the normal approach when playing in cup competitions.
Speaking about competing in major tournaments, Maguire said, “When you’re in a cup competition, you can’t be too aggressive on the pitch. You can’t afford to make mistakes. That’s why you rarely see games with large scorelines in these tournaments. I wonder how the media and fans expect England to perform. Do they think they should beat Serbia 4-0 in their first match and then thrash Denmark 3-0? Do they think winning games is as easy as taking a stroll in the park?”
Maguire felt disappointed that he couldn’t participate in the European Championship due to injury. Reflecting on it, he said, “Not being able to play in the Euros was very tough for me. It was really frustrating. All season long, I’ve been working hard to get my body and mind in the best possible shape, and I truly believed I could contribute to the team.”
Maguire expressed his readiness for competition, saying, “Last year, my future was uncertain. But I had a conversation with the manager (Ten Hag), and he told me he trusted me. When opportunities came, I seized them. I don’t think the team can suddenly transform from being in 8th place in the Premier League to winning all trophies overnight. But I believe we are moving in the right direction, and we will help Manchester United return to where they belong.”
