The Olympics are less than a week away from opening, and as the main event, the materials and cost of production for the Olympic medals are a topic of interest. Today, Italian media La Gazzetta dello Sport reported on the material costs of the medals for this Olympic Games.
A total of 5,084 medals will be awarded at the Paris Olympics, and incredibly, each medal contains fragments of the Eiffel Tower, whether it is a gold, silver, or bronze medal. The medals all have a diameter of 85 millimeters and a thickness of 9.2 millimeters, with 18 grams of Eiffel iron used in each. The total weight of the gold medals is 529 grams, silver medals 525 grams, and bronze medals 455 grams.
What concerns people most is the value of these medals. In fact, apart from the gold medals used in pure gold for the 1904, 1908, and 1912 Olympics, subsequent gold medals were made using a mixture of materials. According to the organizing committee’s regulations, gold medals must contain at least six grams of gold, with the remainder being silver.
So, calculating by raw material cost, each gold medal costs 700 euros, silver medals are 400 euros, while the value of a bronze medal is only seven euros. If gold medals were made entirely of pure gold, the cost would be as high as 30,000 euros.
