25-year-old English forward, Alex Fletcher, suffered a severe head injury after colliding with an advertising board during a match in 2022. After a grueling nine-month recovery period, he briefly returned to the pitch but has recently announced his retirement through social media.
Fletcher had signed his last professional contract with Bath City. In 2022, while playing in a sixth-tier English league match, he collided with a pitchside advertising board, causing a severe head injury and temporary unconsciousness. He was rushed to the hospital where it was diagnosed that Fletcher had suffered a skull fracture due to the impact.
Following surgery, Fletcher underwent a challenging nine-month rehabilitation process and managed to return to amateur competition in October of the previous year. However, recently, Fletcher announced his decision to retire early via social media.
Fletcher wrote: “It is clearly too ambitious for me to continue playing football, and I am very sorry about this. I always believed I owed it to myself to make a comeback, which became my driving force during my recovery. Upon returning to the pitch, I realized that something seemed missing from my game. The severe head injury left me with lasting effects on my balance, timing, and coordination.”
