In an interview with Ouest France, Tony Estanguet, President of the Organizing Committee for the 2024 Paris Olympics, revealed some clues about the identity of the final torchbearer who will light the Olympic flame on July 26 during the opening ceremony.
Who will have the honor of lighting the Olympic flame? According to French media, this is currently one of France’s biggest secrets, with predictions mostly centered around former track and field star Marie-José Pérec and football icon Zinedine Zidane. In an interview with Ouest France on July 20, Tony Estanguet, President of the 2024 Olympics Organizing Committee, provided two small hints.
Firstly, this person may have already carried the torch. When asked whether the individual in question was aware of their role, Tony Estanguet answered “No.” And when asked whether it was possible that someone who had carried the torch in France could also light it at the opening ceremony, Estanguet admitted, “Yes!”, thus opening up the possibility for Marie-José Pérec, who had carried the torch in Guadeloupe.
“These two clues are very important!” Tony Estanguet added. When asked if Zinedine Zidane could be the one to finally light the flame, he responded: “Joker!” (meaning he would not reveal any more information).
The Olympic flame at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was lit by tennis player Naomi Osaka. At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, marathon runner Vanderlei de Lima had the honor. The 2012 London Olympics innovatively chose seven young British athletes who were not yet well-known to the public.
